Creativiteit

Creativity

One definition of “creativity” is as follows:

“The ability to create or conceive something new” (according to woorden.org).

As a former scientist, I like to use reputable sources. However, you have to pay for the Dikke Van Dale (the standard Dutch dictionary) these days, and that’s a step too far for just the intro to a blog post. So, we’ll stick with woorden.org. The fact that you now have to pay to access a reputable dictionary could easily be the subject of an entirely different blog post—but that’s not the goal here.

The ability to create or conceive something new. Like an artist does. I know plenty of creative people, people who come up with unique solutions to problems, or who craft handmade gifts or clothing.

I look at these individuals, those who truly create, with great admiration.

For a long time, I claimed that I wasn’t creative. I felt I was never capable of creating or conceiving anything new, of truly thinking “outside the box.” At most, I might have hovered around the edges of the box.

And yet, I have some fairly creative hobbies: baking cakes, singing, gaming, and photography. But I always rely on existing recipes. In The Sims, I mostly focus on recreating things. And for every photograph I’ve ever taken, there are a thousand others that look just like it. There’s nothing innovative about that.

I have always maintained, however, that I am good at connecting existing elements; combining unique flavors in a cake, or exploring the intersection of geometry and nature in my photographs. But I never considered that to be “creative,” no matter how often others described me as such.

I simply didn’t understand what they saw in me. The expectations they had of me, the idea that I could create something new, that I was, in fact, an artist, made me afraid. I worried that if I labeled myself as "creative," I would inevitably end up disappointing people.

But it turns out there was a misunderstanding in my own mind about what it actually means to be creative.

For instance, another definition of "creativity" includes terms like: "1) A drive to create, 2) Expression, 3) Creative power, 4) Creative capacity." (mijnwoordenboek.nl)

The recurring use of the word "create" gives it an almost religious undertone, yet this definition resonates with me much more. I frequently feel a drive to bake (in fact, something I’ve baked is cooling as I write this) or to engage in one of my other hobbies. Baking, singing, gaming, photography, and, more recently, embroidery, are all forms of self-expression for me. This expression gives me the power to clear my mind, which, in turn, creates the capacity for new ideas. It’s like a cycle of creativity.

I don’t have to be original to call myself creative. And I think that’s a pretty good realization to have reached.
